Biography:
At the age of fifty-four I was taken seriously ill with CFS, and spent many months in convalescence. Having been almost house bound, off times unable to hold a paper, without my arms aching and needing a lot of rest, I was seeking to find how I could usefully spend my time. Being that my mind had been released from a multitude of responsibilities, at home, with church and work I began to reminisce on the time I spent growing up on our family farm, a mixed farm on the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire in some of Great Britain's most beautiful countryside.
As the years pass by I am growing more and more to appreciate that the generation my father and I grew up in was a time of great transition. The century that my father was born into saw the decline of horses and the introduction of the tractor. Gang manual labour, which created a great community spirit, was fading with the introduction of mechanisation.
Farming involves a creative mind, strength of character, as well as the ability to improvise, like when machinery breaks down or animals fall ill.
I saw many of these historic experiences being lost, skills that in a day to come may need to be reintroduced for us to survive. So I felt the urge to put pen to paper and relive those years, which young folk today may never have the pleasure to enjoy.
In this book my experiences include the happy and difficult times together with the occasional humorous moments. My prime motive is to record how it was, to show how basic and simple life was, but although life was hard work, it was very enjoyable and rewarding.
I would like to dedicate this book primarily to my late mother and to John one of our loyal workers who both died during the years 1999 and 2000.
