Biography:
Much like the title character of Dathan Charles, the Dione M. Coumbe story is full of rich cultural backgrounds, music, art, entrepreneurship - and shades of mystery, intrigue and controversy. Born in London, Coumbe came of age in post World War II Europe. Circumstance and unbridled restlessness resulted in her expulsion from senior school, and launched her on an odyssey, which ultimately took her from Fleet Street to Marseilles, Naples, Gibraltar, Cartagena, Casablanca, Tangier and many ports of call and destinations of opportunity in between.
At various turns a vagabond adventurer, lithographer, copywriter, news agency owner, Coumbe arrived in Gibraltar as a staging post to cover the Biafran War. Here she was diverted, with a partner, into running a raucous and rowdy bar where she became well known for her humour and tact in handling ‘happy' customers. The establishment became a focal point for characters who were famous, infamous, notorious and occasionally honourable.
On return to England she moved easily into the world of business that covered a range including catering, floristry, wholesale and retail operations. On the occasions when she brushed against public institutions that appeared to have a gender bias she fought and won her corner against such discrimination.
Coumbe has an honours degree in law, has been an international professional genealogist and historical researcher and contributed articles on these subjects to various publications around the world. She is also a well known book reviewer. Most recently she has returned to her artistic roots and is creating a new portfolio of work.
