Fortress of Fire is Doug's first published novel. It's based on places he knows well – he's watched the SBS dropping from their Hercules over Studland Bay; he's lived on the Isle of Wight, near the fortress that's described in the book; he's worked at the EU buildings in Brussels and the NATO scientific base in The Hague, which both feature in the book; he's had some extreme experiences in life, and taken some of them into the book too.
Doug had a long career in Communications, travelling widely in Europe as a consultant to the UK Government, representing their position in technical meetings, standards committees, conferences, and at the EU in Brussels, where he was on the UK negotiating team on many occasions. He has technical qualifications – an MSc in Communication Systems and Fellowship of the Institution of Electrical Engineers – but is equally proud of his holistic training in Counselling and Reiki.
His first published fiction was around age 10, when he produced a one-page "newspaper", typed longhand on an old Remington and sold for one penny, that included a serial about the adventures of a jet pilot! His holistic life began in 1993, when he and his wife went on a relationship course on the Greek island of Skyros. Since then, they've never looked back, and Doug's holistic beliefs are at the heart of his books.
