Biography:
Born in Muswell Hill, London, in 1948, to parents Freda Eleanor and James Marshall Lowry, and having an older sister, Elizabeth Anne, I moved to High Barnet at the age of one, where I lived for the next fifteen years until my family moved to Turnford, also in Hertfordshire. Reading, writing, painting, poetry and sewing seemed always to be a part of my creative childhood.
Marrying John Spaul in 1969, and living briefly, in London and Enfield, we moved to rural Bygrave, where we produced our son, Martin, in 1974, and our daughter, Joanna, in 1976. Far from finding less time for artistic endeavours, the following years were a hotbed of creativity, the whole family becoming involved in growing vegetables and fruit, making pottery, and restoring classic cars, as well as a great deal of serious D.I.Y. improvements. I have written poems and write-ups for local village magazines in Bygrave and more recently, in Gamlingay, where we now live, and some for the local W.I - a rich seam to work. A recent discovery of a poet in the family, Henry Dawson Lowry, 1869-1906, coincided with this book, which has been gestating for many years, and is illustrated by our daughter, Joanna.
