Mike was born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire in 1944, so will shortly celebrate a landmark birthday. An opportune time for a first anthology! Apart from seven years R.A.F. service Mike lived in Melton until he moved to the Shetland Islands in 2000. After eighteen months tremendous experience on the North Isles, Mike and his new wife Barbara relocated to Cheddar in Somerset, which they will leave in boxes (or urns).
Mike has two children, Heidi-Marie and Gavin from his first marriage and is now stepfather to Jonathan (12) and Christopher (10). You will see that Barbara is the inspiration for many of his poems, whilst the problems of parenthood are wryly observed in items such as ‘What Hair,’ ‘Time On My Hands’ and ‘Someone Is Missing.’
Having left Melton Mowbray Grammar School with an undistinguished academic record, but a healthy interest in football and the opposite sex, his career covered various stages. From railway clerk, to being a ‘shiny’ (accounts clerk) in the R.A.F. before a career in sales and sales management beckoned, with diverse companies, including the Mars Corporation. After the trauma of a redundancy, Mike started his own office supplies business that he ran for thirteen years, before the Shetland adventure. In Shetland he caught the ‘writing bug’ having been given the opportunity to work as Features Editor for ‘The Shetland Times.’ Creative writing tutor at Wells Portway, Judith Thomas has encouraged Mike to try his hand at different writing forms, which has unearthed a love of poetry.
Sport, including swimming, football, cricket and rugby, has and still does play an important part in Mike’s life, with his poetic tributes to England’s Rugby World Cup winning rugby team (Worldbeaters) and its’ giant of a Captain, Martin Johnson (Jonno) amongst the offerings. Advancing age has brought the almost inevitable nostalgia to the book, but this is tempered by the romance and contrasted with the thoughts on illness and depression.
Hopefully, this pot-pourri of words will please you, the reader. Thank you.
