Author Biography: Rekha Waheed
Rekha Waheed is a fresh new writer with a sharp eye for Asian fusion, popular culture and social evolution. With her smart debut novel, ‘The A-Z Guide to Arranged Marriage’, Rekha unfolds the intricacies of Brit-Asian experiences for the mainstream.
Born in West London, and of Bengali origin, Rekha excelled at her studies, attended University summer school for the advanced at age 15 and then read Economics at SOAS, University of London where she continued to complete a MSc in Economic Development.
Rekha has gained experience with The Watson, Little Literary Agency, sat on the board of Women In Publishing, and worked as a columnist for Bangla Mirror. She is also an active promoter of improved literacy programs in the British Bengali Community. Rekha now belongs to a network of authors who aim to promote under represented voices in the publishing industry. She is currently working with the Arts Council, Monsoon Press and Penguin to raise the profile of British Ethnic and Muslim literature.
Rekha travelled the world as a corporate consultant, whilst pursuing her passion for writing. Rekha joined the Harrow Writers Club, participated in public readings and soon caught the attention of a literary agent. She has since signed up with Monsoon Press
To date, Rekha has received great interest since her reading at London’s 2005 Spitalfield’s Literary Event. She is cited as one of Asiana’s ‘Faces to Watch in 2005’. With a style that mixes the modern with the traditional, Rekha caters for diverse urban communities that are exposed to and challenged by British-Asian culture. With the launch of the ‘A-Z Guide to Arranged Marriage’, alongside the upcoming sequel to A-Z Guide and a secured commissioned novel, Rekha is set to become a familiar face in the publishing industry.
