Sandra Affleck came to Kirriemuir when her husband became a Headteacher there in 1973. In the late 1970’s, she began researching the history of the town and its famous author.
Her first book was “A Guide to Kirriemuir and District” which was published by James Norrie Ltd in 1981. Subsequently, she gave illustrated talks and guided walks, and contributed to several leaflets aimed to inform visitors to the town.
In 1985 she was a key player in “Anniversary Celebrations Eighty-Five” which marked both the Centenary of the Town Hall and the 125th anniversary of Barrie’s birth.
Affleck Publications first produced “The Little Red Town and JMB” in 1990, and in 1996, they published, on its centenary, a re-print of the first-ever Guide Book to Kirriemuir, “Through Thrums.”
2004 saw Sandra compile the text for the Quatercentenary Calendar of the Town House, and, with Helen Main, research and write the story of the 20th century in the Southmuir for the Centenary of St Andrew’s Church. “Views of the Southmuir” includes the story of the happenings in Barrie’s second Kirriemuir home, “Strath View”.
In 2005 she appeared on BBC2’s “Castle in the Country” series, speaking about Barrie’s Kirriemuir roots.
