~~ A Note from the Author to all Potential Readers ~~
I was born in a village-like community in the industrial heart of Manchester. This - like many similar settings - was first created in the latter part of the Victorian period, and is the community you will find extensively described in the book.
The 1939-45 war marked the end of those communities and the enormous disruption the war created launched me on my travels, far and wide, around the world - this by way of the Royal Marines and then the Australian Army.
However, in my travels, I always carried with me the community of my birthplace; and I eventually found my way back to Britain and made many visits to the city in which that community once lived. During these visits, I re-established a close relationship with my mother and from conversations we had about a vanished way of life arose the "different times" that the book explores.
Motivated by my increasing awareness of the immense social changes that had taken place since the mentioned communities existed, I acquired a University Degree, which included economic and social history plus social psychology. These disciplines, I thought, might give me some insight into the process of change.
This merging of sentiment and an academic sense of direction shaped the offered publication - which I hope you'll read and feel rewarded by the experience.
