Manoeuvres Made Easy

Sample

Reversing into a side road on your left

Drive forwards past the entrance to the side road, remaining in first gear, for a distance of approximately 2-3 car lengths.

Assess the corner as you drive past.

Check mirrors, signal if necessary and bring the car to a stop parallel to, and slightly further away from the kerb than you would for a normal stop.

Apply the handbrake and select neutral.

If necessary, adjust your seating position (you can remove your seat belt).

Prepare your car for reverse, take all round observations. Wait, if necessary, until it is safe to proceed.

Maintain clutch control to keep car slow, (if reversing down hill use brake to regulate speed of car) whilst looking over left shoulder out of the rear window.

Just before your car reaches the point of turn (where the front of your car will swing out to the right), look forwards for oncoming road users and over your right shoulder for overtaking vehicles and pedestrians crossing the road. Look then for pedestrians crossing the side road and vehicles wishing to enter. (If necessary, stop and wait until it is safe to proceed).

Steer towards the left, in accordance with the curve of the corner, (the mount of steering will depend on the sharpness of the corner).

Try and follow the kerb all the way around the corner, by either keeping the kerb in view in the corner of the rear window or within the rear nearside window.
