Throughout history men and woman have dreamt of finding the perfect sexual partner. Women have been at a great disadvantage when it comes to finding their ideal object of desire. Usually they have had to wait and hope that the right man would come along. Men, on the other hand, have had the opportunity to go out and look for the ideal lover. They have had to make choices, and there is no end to the advice that literature gives on what to look for in the perfect woman. But it usually amounts to one thing - get them young. One ancient Chinese text says:
A man should pick young women whose breasts have not yet developed and who are well covered with flesh. They should have hair fine as silk and small eyes, where separation of the pupil and the white is well defined. Her face and body should be smooth and her speech harmonious. Either she should have not pubic hair or it should be fine and smooth.

Of course, these days it is not usually practical for a man to discover whether a woman has pubic hair or not, or whether it is smooth or rough, before he begins courting. But in ancient China it was perfectly possible to send someone to check out the potential partner. In Secret Sketches of the Han Palace, the anonymous author describes a journey that Madame Wu and the eunuch Ch'ao made around AD 150 to examine the daughter of a general, Nu Ying, on behalf of the Emperor Huang Tsi:
With Ch'ao in the outer room, Madame Wu took Nu Ying into the bedroom. The maids were sent away and the door was locked. Nu Ying's face was lit by the sun. She looked radiant, like snow in the morning sunlight. Her eyes were as clear as a tranquil sea. Her eyebrows were long and shapely. Her white teeth stood out against her tiny red mouth. Madam Wu pulled out Nu Ying's hairpin and her hair cascaded like black satin to the floor.
After feeling the hair, Madam Wu told Nu Ying to take of f her underwear. Blushing, the young girl refused. The older woman told her that it was an imperial order and she must obey. Nu Ying began to cry and turned her face to the wall. Then Madame Wu gently undressed her. She carried her naked body into the sunlight. It was smooth. Her skin was creamy and the fragrance of her body filled the air. Her breasts were firm and large enough to fill a cupped hand and her navel was deep enough to carry a pearl half-an-inch in diameter.
Madame Wu was delighted with Nu Ying's slightly raised pubic mound. Then, gently, she parted the young girl's thigh to find her jade gate scarlet like a glowing fire. 'She is a pure and chaste virgin,' cried the older woman.
Until recent times a high price was put on virginity these days the premium is on experience. Virginity was particularly prized in China, but not for the usual reasons of masculine pride. The master Peng Tsu explains:
