The book is set in the present and centers on Martin Richardson, a middle-aged Englishman, who is very disillusioned with his life, even though he has a good job, a loving daughter and lots of friends.
His wife died two years ago and he now stands at a crossroads. On the spur of the moment he goes on vacation to Colorado and chances to meet a Native American woman and her family. He gets to know the family well and falls in love with the woman.
The story tells of their relationship during his brief stay and sharply contrasts their respective ways of life. He learns some of the ways of the Indian that opens his mind to a whole new way of thinking. Tragedy and great happiness happen along the way and Martin has to make the decision on where his future lies.
