Ourtopia

Synopsis

The title derives from the word utopia, which means literally ‘no place’, a kind of never-never land. The present book is only utopian in the sense that it seeks the best possible world; it is not yet another prescription for a perfect society.

A major modern disease is compartmentalism. This encourages the idea that problems can best be solved by tackling them one at a time, failing to notice that they are all in fact inter-related.

Ourtopia looks at the various aspects of the world we live in - nationalism and ethnicity, armies and armaments, markets and consumers, children and education, crime and punishment, work and play, sex and relationships, globalism and regionalism.

After a brief look at the way each has developed, spelling out the good and bad aspects of the status quo, it seeks solutions in a way which makes for a coherent planet. Each chapter ends with a ten point summary of the kind of society we should be working towards under the heading ‘Ourtopia’ - which is simply ‘Utopia’ with a couple of letters inserted to change it from ‘no place’ to ‘our place’.

If you think the planet is dangerously adrift at present, desperately in need of a much better co-ordinated effort to set it on course for survival, this book is for you.
