CHAPTER ONE

OUTSET

Beatrice, Bea as she had been called by everybody as long as she could remember, stood gazing out of the morning room window which overlooked the gardens in the centre of Kensington Gardens Square. A tall girl, her brown, straight hair pulled back into a bun, and wearing a plain brown dress, relieved only by a lace collar and the pearl necklace her mother had given her just before she died, she was handsome rather than pretty. She was engaged in contemplating the three glorious days of unaccustomed freedom which now lay ahead.
