Synopsis

Vicky Douglass returns to her old home with a heavy heart and a huge secret, The story opens with her taking the 'bus back into her past and describes her strangely mixed emotions as she goes along.

She has recently lost her beloved mother, Mary. It was Mary's dying wish that she should return and contact Jim, the handsome and rugged man she knew she would always love, yet doubted her knew she existed.

Jim was a farmer and together with his family had loved to have Vicky working alongside them. During the harvesting period Vicky's parents had also helped out, but then her father, Glen, a policeman had been promoted and transferred. Glen had promised Vicky that if she studied and completed her college degree in agricultural farming, she could work on the farm and Jim and family were delighted. Vicky had always been besotted with Jim - in spite of him being twelve years her senior. He had watched her grow into a beautiful young lady and had lost his heart to her, although in view of the age difference had vowed never to touch her, he respected her and her family.

He did not like her friend, Betty. In his mind she was far too advanced for her years and from what he had heard a little 'easy' where men were concerned. She introduced Vicky to Lance and Jim was consumed with a raging jealousy he could not control and was extremely offhand with Vicky as he struggled desperately to ignore her presence. Two or three times he had been unable to keep his hands and mouth from the beautiful, sensual woman and as shame washed over him, he tried indifference to keep her away from him. Vicky lived for his touch, his mouth and more and couldn't understand his apparent mood swings. On her eighteenth birthday and just prior to her move, Jim made the most beautiful love with her, leaving her mind and body tingling with sheer joy. He then sent her home as shame for his lack of control haunted him.

Bitterly lost and lonely, Vicky had left the pretty villas and been forced to admit to her parents that she was pregnant. In spite of their love, she refused to admit the name of the baby's father.

Almost a year later, she admitted to Mary as she lay on her death bed, that the baby was Jim's child. Mary begged her to tell Jim and his parents. At her wits end with sadness, Vicky made that promise and Glen insisted she did just that. He was returning to the beautiful villas following a further promotion.
