During the afternoon of 26 April 1999 news began to spread of a horrific incident that had taken place in Fulham, south-west London. A woman had been shot in the head outside her home. A woman being shot in the daytime in a suburban street in Britain is shocking. Such crimes make us realise the dangers that exist in our society. This was not just any woman though; in this instance the victim of the crime was the television presenter Jill Dando.
     More than two years later, on 2 July 2001, a forty one year old man named Barry Michael George was convicted at the Old Bailey, by a majority of ten to one, of murdering Dando. Only eleven jurors decided upon the verdict at George
