At the height of the Cold War President Eisenhower secured from Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, a base in Scotland on the Holy Loch for American nuclear-powered Polaris Missile submarines.
The Soviets, concerned at the threat these submarines posed for the Warsaw Pact, covertly positioned countermeasures and agents close by the Loch.
With the break up of the Soviet Union, and the improvement of relations with the West, political events in the new Russian Federation became paramount and military and naval matters were neglected. The countermeasures and Operation Kraken, the plan for their use, were overlooked by successive Russian governments.
During the hostilities between the Russian Federation and Chechnya both sides became aware of the political and military implications of Operation Kraken and, through the Chechen rebels, so do Al Qaeda. The Russians want their weapons back especially as a nuclear weapon is involved. Al Qaeda want the weapons to use in their Jihad against the American government and their British allies.
The Russians turn to the British for help. Al Qaeda have their own man, a well educated British Moslem fundamentalist, on the spot. It becomes a race against time to get the weapons; but there/’s many a slip twixt cup and lip!
