Whitecourt was a two hour drive west of the Provincial capital, Edmonton. Some, unkindly, might say that Whitecourt was in the middle of nowhere. Oil, farming and forestry industries together stores and small businesses gave its population of six thousand or so a good level of prosperity. As the weeks passed I came to know the rivalries, loves and other personal interactions found in any community.

One girl particularly took my notice, Lucy Armitage. Her mother had died and she had then been abandoned by her father when she was five. Raised in a series of state and foster homes, she became the wild child of Whitecourt. Vigilance by the police kept the small community
