Michael Jackson first entered a recording studio in November 1967, just three months after his ninth birthday. Two years later he and his older brothers scored their first hit, I Want You Back – and, despite set-backs that would have ended the career of a lesser man, Michael’s legion of fans remain as loyal today as they have ever been.
The aim of this book is to document the many songs Michael has been involved with over the years – as singer, as writer, as producer, or simply as the inspiration or subject. The songs are listed numerically and alphabetically, and each listing includes the artist, release date and connection to Michael, together with a wealth of other interesting information.
A large number of sources were used in compiling the book. The starting point, naturally, was the officially released singles and albums by Michael and his brothers, not forgetting the numerous collaborations he has been involved with over the years.
Michael has name-checked numerous songs he has written or co-written in copyright court cases – most notably, in Mexico in 1993. All these titles are detailed, as are the poems – but not the reflections – featured in Michael’s 1992 book of poems and reflections, Dancing The Dream.
Also included and detailed: official remixes, notable demo versions, cover versions & other hit versions, and notable adaptations and tracks, especially hits, which have sampled a Jackson or Jackson-related song.
Songs Michael is rumoured to have written, or recorded, or been involved with, but for which there is a lack of hard evidence they actually exist, have been consigned to the ‘Rumour Has It’ section, at the back of the book.
