Set in mid-Victorian Scotland
Murder and suspense falls on Lavinia Pentre, proprietor of The Lodge, after the mysterious disappearance of the Revd Benjamin Parson’s mother, a resident.
His mother found dead in an unused butler’s shaft, suspected of murder by strangulation for Miss Bereince Tree, a retired actress, after cheating Mrs Parsons into believing she was Queen Victoria.
Benjamin, a young widower, in an effort to prove Lavinia Pentre’s innocence becomes attached to her and falls in love.
He returns to the Lodge to discover it has been sold and his beloved Lavinia left the country to live with her niece in Switzerland.
Benjamin, in an effort to pursue her and ask for her hand in marriage, discovers Lavinia’s deep secret leading to dire circumstances.
