Gertrude, the daughter of Lord and Lady Breamar, is persuaded by her father to invest her inherited fortune into a shipping line with its owner Carl Gratton. Carl becomes attached to Gertrude and they marry. Sadly, Gertrude longs for an heir but Carl refuses to consumate the marriage.
Carl had adopted the shipwrecked Ivanich Romanov, a young royal from the court of St Petersburg. Ivan, to escape a revolution, was sent to live with his grandmother the Empress Marie in Denmark and the ship was sunk by an explosion. Ivan was the only surviver and rescued by a vessel heading for Aberdeen in Scotland where he was handed over to Carl Gratton, the shipping line owner. Carl fed and clothed him and eventually regarded him as his son.
