Coaching The Coach - A complete guide how to coach soccer skills through drills

Sample

Introduction

This book is broken down into eleven chapters. We will begin with a very basic warm up and continually progress through the basic football skills onto games and finish by preparing session plans. Each skill will be discussed and coached through a series of drills.

The intention of this book is to stimulate the reader to interact through questions. It is also intended to provide the coach with the knowledge and ability to better use other coaching books or drills.

As you go through the chapters you will be questioned. These will refer to what, how and why you can use the drill to coach. The questions will appear in bold type and are a time to think and reflect on an answer.

You will be asked to think about how your players might cope with the drills.

How will they perform? What can you improve? How can you coach?

You may want to read the book with a notebook and pen handy. You can then jot down your own thoughts and answers to the many questions. You can expand upon the drills and invent variations or even new drills and try them out on the training field. The aim is to challenge you as a coach to think about what you coach and how.

The first drill in each chapter will always be the easiest. As will the first chapter. We will go from a very basic understanding of a warm up through to quite complex drills in the later chapters. We will also look at the different skill levels or ages of players and their requirements and limitations. Learn how the same drill can be adapted from the young beginner to the older or more experienced player. We will progress all the drills within each chapter logically with the progressions becoming increasingly more difficult.

As we go through the various chapters we will look at the different styles of coaching. All players learn differently so we have to adapt our coaching methods so they can understand and learn.

We will look at how questioning your players about a drill will make them think about their own technique. You may as the coach have to guide them to the correct solution. In some cases you may need to clearly explain what is required.A picture is worth a thousand words so demonstrate what you want.A demonstration cuts the waffle of an explanation.

The manner in which you coach is crucial.Think about the age of your players and the way you interact with them. Barking commands and getting annoyed with 6 year olds because they cannot do a Cryuff turn will not improve them. Gently build your players confidence through small successes and challenge them to take the next step, but most of all be patient.

We will also look at introducing fun to the session. When the players are enjoying themselves they are much more likely to listen. They will be relaxed and willing to learn, or try out new things to improve and gain an edge over their peers. If they are having fun they are less likely to worry about the cold or the rain. So by creating a fun relaxed coaching session we are actually creating a better atmosphere for our players to learn and be coached.

The final objective of this book is for all new parents and coaches to realise that education is key to coaching. This book gives you an insight into the many different coaching points and topics. It also provides you with some of the ways and means to coach these points. I hope this book will show you that coaching is more than setting out a drill. I hope it triggers a spark to learn more. There are many coaching courses, which can and should be taken. This book is written to compliment these courses, which will provide you with further information and details to coach your players correctly.
