"Well, how did you come to know Dylan?" asked Charlie.
"We used see each other on the street, exchanged hellos and had light chats. Our houses were not far apart. We took the same way into town. His house was on my way to the corner store. We bumped into each other quite regularly.
When I left university I moved to the West Country with my fiancé. I had no permanent address in Exleigh to let Dylan know where I was. For some reason I never got around to telling him. A year or so later mother also moved to the West Country. On the day mother moved out, my fiancé and I helped with a few last items. I caught sight of Dylan as we were leaving.
"Dylan was besotted with you, you know," said Charlie.
"I feel flattered. Did he speak to you about me?"
"Yes, we were very close, we shared each others secrets"
"What did he say about me?"
"That he had seen you around before then one day he was driving home when he caught a glimpse of you outside a shop choosing some flowers. You were briefly in his sight two seconds or so, as he described it, no more, during which time he was stricken by you but he could didn't understand why. It was not lust although you were and are very attractive. The best he could describe it was that you had a presence, a demeanor, poise, disposition call it what you will. Whatever it was Dylan found the sight of you spellbinding and he could not take his eyes off you. He wanted to get to know you but with the age difference the mere thought of 'chatting you up' turned him into a bag of nerves. It was as if he had fallen in love with you which he said was ridiculous as he hardly knew you."
Lisa asked, "Then why was he so aloof, insular and detached with me? I was the one who tried to broaden the range of our chats, get closer to him as it were but when I did so he terminated that topic and the barriers went up."
"Lisa, you must understand that a protracted bitter divorce after ten years of a bad marriage had left him an emotional wreck. To make matters worse he was self employed but business was not good and he feared losing his house and therefore custody of his son who he dearly loved. He withdrew into himself and if anyone probed too far then the barriers went up. This was a shame as he had been a warm outgoing person. Then we met up one day and I noticed the difference straight away. He was bubbly and outgoing, the Dylan of old. I asked him what had brought this about. He was coy to start but told me that her name was Lisa and the most beautiful girl in God's creation but she was twenty years younger than him. He waxed lyrical about you as he described your smile, your eyes, your mannerisms, your skin tone and although you wore loose fittings clothes he could tell that you had a large pair of boobs even with him being a belly man. He described you as a dream on legs and when he looked at you he felt as though he had died and gone to heaven. I'd never heard him talk about anyone like that before. The more the delight he found in you the greater was his fall. Some while later Dylan reverted back to his previous low state. When I asked him what had happened. He said that try as he may he could not muster the nerve to ask you to have a coffee with him at his place or in town, go to the movies or whatever. Ashamed with himself, he retreated back into his shell and lost what little self confidence he had left. Well, that's why he kept conversations with you or anyone else superficial and kept you at arms length.
