Synopsis

1966/1967 - Newlyweds Dillon and Marianne are happily living near Panama City, Florida where Dillion is a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force. He wants a transfer to Vietnam in order to advance his military career. Marianne wants a family: Dillon doesn't. Dillion helps stranded motorist, Lexie, and is seduced by her. Unknowingly pregnant, she returns to San Francisco and marries as her wealthy family has planned. Dillon receives his transfer; Marianne goes to Nebraska to stay with her family.

1968 - Dillon goes missing in action. Marianne starts design courses. Lexie has her baby.

1971/1973 - Marianne moves to San Francisco. Lexie hires Marianne's firm to redecorate her house and the women become friends.

1975/1976 - Dillon is found and returns, physically ill and depressed; one side effect is sterility. Dillon and Lexie meet and recognize each other.

1977 - Conrad and Lexie's marriage ends in divorce. Dillon discovers his son and forces a relationship. Dillon and Marianne struggle with his depression when Marianne finds out about Dillie. They divorce and Marianne ends her friendship with Lexie.
