Synopsis

Lance Corporal Chris Mason is a professional soldier and good at fighting.  In a peace time army, it can be a problem and he has twice been busted from Sergeant for using his fists in bar brawls.  However, when the Germans invade France in May 1940 and the Phoney War comes to an end, his skills will keep him and his fellow soldiers alive.

After an unsuccessful counter-attack at Arras, Mason finds himself and his section cut off behind enemy lines.  His duty is to get the remainder of his men and a mysterious officer back to safety.

Whilst avoiding the Germans, the group encounters Michèle, an attractive woman, running a farm by herself, as her husband has been conscripted in the French army.  She becomes part of the team when she decides to escort a wounded soldier to the hospital in Lille.

Based on historical events leading to the retreat of the British Expeditionary Force via Dunkirk, this is a fast-paced action novel with tender and poignant moments.
