Set in an island in the Mediterranean and on the island of Phuket in Thailand, this novel traces the apparently wrongful arrest of a prematurely retired and successful British businessman for the grisly murder of his much younger and beautiful wife whom he discovered having an affair with a local. The evidence is circumstantial, no body is ever found.
The man, Vince, is incarcerated in the Dickensian jail on the Mediterranean island and is about to give up all hope until his lawyer meets an ambitious beautiful and courageous British female politician destined for great things in the Labour Government of the day
For her own ambitious ends she takes Vince's case to her government, to the European court of justice and to the highest and most corrupt levels on the Mediterranean island. Whilst doing so she clandestinely falls in love with Vince.
She achieves his release on bail and together with his lawyer, begins to prepare his defence.
The action switches to Phuket where it would appear that Vince's wife and her lover have escaped to begin a new life. But funds soon run out, she is forced into bar work, drugs and worse, Her lover proves dissolute and hopeless.
The Thai mafia, who managed them, no longer has use for them and arranges an accident that disposes of them.
The politician, now Deputy Prime Minister and protecting her boss from the many rumours of scandal he has gathered, learns of the accident and soon has Vince released.
Then comes the real denouement, just on the eve of her accession to the job of Prime Minister of Great Britain.
