Alexander Mason, is self opinionated, pompous, tyrannical and a womaniser. He returns to England with his family in the closing weeks of an old century, to start a new life in a small seaside town. He buys a mercantile store determined to make it the best store in the town, and when Sarah gives birth to his second child, a much wanted son, it seems he has everything he ever wanted. But other people and personalities enter his well ordered life. Mrs Stubbs their homely cook/housekeeper, the cheeky ragamuffin, Millie, and his daughter Lousa's piano teacher, the beautiful Sybella. They help bring changes that are out of Alexander's control.
Grains Of Sand follow the lives and loves, the highs and the lows of the family Mason. Alexander and Sarah's descendants live through two world wars, with the destruction and death, and see the rise of a whole new world of technology. As the twentieth century draws to a close, heralding a new millennium one person celebrates not only the year 2000, but his birthday.
