ART SCHOOL PASSIONS: A NOVEL OF THE 1950s tells the story of Jeff Mitchell, an awkward, intense, idealistic art student with a passion for painting who develops an obsessive passion for Marion, a beautiful but distant fellow student, that nearly destroys him. The novel is set in the late 1950s at the time of Angry Young Men, CND marches and the vogues for Traditional Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, Existentialism and Action Painting. Jeff's ambition is to be a modern painter of the first rank and he struggles mightily to achieve it. While studying fine art at a University on Tyneside, he encounters a fascinating cast of characters. Jeff's pursuit of Marion seems fated to end in disaster, but perhaps Ruth Elswick, the Geordie girl from the slums of Newcastle, can provide the love he really needs.
