Mark Sheffield, a bright young man and aspiring playboy, seeking an undemanding but lucrative job, is forced by the terms of his uncle’s will to lower his sights, and so becomes first a reluctant ‘entertainer’ on a bog standard cruise ship and later assistant to the head of a chaotic prep school fighting closure - all in the hope of getting his hands on his uncle’s small country house. Sod’s law plays a recurring and sometimes farcical note in Mark’s life - right up to the end.
