ON THE SIDELINES - SPRING 2004
May 2nd 2004
Yet another brief dip into the fascinating world of fact and fiction writing, and where it’s at with some of our authors at the moment.

The March edition of Vogue magazine includes a mention of Vanessa Wild, in a fairly lengthy article about Melasma, the subject of Vanessa’s slim but informative book called MELASMA, IS THIS THE CLEAR SOLUTION? Selling extremely well, the book relates her own research into the skin condition, and the nutritional therapy she discovered by chance, which makes it fade.

2nd up, Timothy Pilgrim’s RO has lately starred at RAF Mildenhall in a successful book-signing session, one of a number the author has done. Timothy works very hard at his own publicity and has discovered that the personal touch just cannot be overlooked. He is very grateful to Wendy Lake who gave him the initial help in finalising his true life book, and said the hardest part in writing it was deciding what to leave out. He has chatted on his local Radio Norfolk as well as placing his book with the British Film School’s team of scriptwriters, for possible screening. He awaits a review from the Mail On Sunday. Ideally he would like to see a group of our authors at a joint book signing. Anyone interested, please tell us.

SERENITY, Winston Pate’s book has been brought to the attention of a number of the large retailers and is selling well locally. We have entered this for the Man Booker Prize For Fiction this year, it's a fine piece of literature and deserves at the very least to reach the 'long list'. Please note, he will be trying his luck on the BBC TV quiz show "The Weakest Link" on May 26th - he's the one with the American accent. Brave man!

We are also very excited to have recently published THE ENCYCLOPAEDIA FOR LOCKSMITHS by Mick Friend and foresee this fascinating tome of 254 pages will soon be safely deposited and keyed in to our top selling list. Sorry Mick, couldn’t resist that one.

Similarly, the re-publication of Joyce Collin-Smith’s CALL NO MAN MASTER a minor classic, previously published by Gateway has illuminated our authors list, and sits well with her latest book THE PATHLESS LAND.

And on to INNOCENT IN AFRICA, Annette Willoughby’s personal account of her time in Lesotho. Very aptly, it has landed on the desk of one Prince Harry, and she has received a wonderful letter back from Clarence House, assuring her of his attention to the book in the near future. There are some fond references of his mother within it and the impact her death had on the Lesotho people.

A book on tracing back family history, JUMPING IN COWPATS by Chris Bicheno has raised a very useful amount of money for the Neurological Ward of Southampton General Hospital. The author’s grandson had treatment for a brain tumour there and Chris has been selling his book to family and friends, resulting in £500.00 being given as a donation for equipment to the hospital. Neat, huh! Well done Chris.

And finally, do call and chat to us – either to Wendy Lake, Submissions Editor, well known for her care and interest in YOUR hard work, or to old Blue Eyes himself, Richard who is pacing the floor, fine tuning his part as the barrister in the John Mortimer play "Dock Brief". He is- to the life- Morgenhall, and has to get it right within the next twenty four hours**. Oh yes…..and don’t mention the Atkins Diet. He has eaten his own weight in solid protein lately and still finds it hard to transform himself into the man I first met, back in 2001. Counting carbohydrates seems to get a little lost in translation when he is standing at the bar, so that "Diet tonic with ice and lemon" comes out as "A pint of Theakstons, please." Must be a bloke thing. Watch this space!

** Dock Brief, a one act play by John Mortimer (Most famous for his books and TV series "Rumpole of the Bailey") was performed on 19th April at the Mumford Theatre Cambridge as part of the Cambridge Drama Festival.

Any ideas for a caption?
