Following on from the success of her first book "Innocent in Africa" Annette Willoughby has recently published "Born Singing" with us, the continuing story of her time in the mountain kingdom in Lesotho, in the late 1990's.
Now living in Shefford, Bedfordshire, she was recently the subject of an article in a Hertfordshire newspaper, The Comet, which was focussing on a Hitchin event Arts For Life, which drew attention to Third World poverty.
Sue Fisher reports: Annette has spurned retirement to embrace a new mission, a new career and a new name- Malimakatso. It means Mother of Miracles and to the people of Lesotho, South Africa, that is exactly who she is.
After getting to know the Makibi family who run a small church in the Lesotho hills, Annette rapidly became committed to helping them. Among the projects she has made possible, with the help of numerous fundraisers, schools and churches, is bringing water and electricity to their village. Annette called the book "Born Singing" because "they are such happy people, with lives governed by the weather. They are not aggressive, just trying to survive and we can change their lives a bit, make a difference." The author frequently gives talks to local school children and W.I groups and the like, and is setting off for another visit to the people of Ha Simone, and her adopted family on 9th October, to stay in the little house they have built for her. Music to their ears, undoubtedly.
