Barry George appeal - S C Lomax goes to see the appeal hearing
Nov 8th 2007

The author of Who Killed Jill Dando The Case of Barry George arguing that Barry George is the victim of the greatest British miscarriage of justice in decades, is confident that Dando's alleged killer will have his conviction overturned.

Scott Lomax, a Derbyshire author, was at the Court of Appeal following the proceedings during the three day hearing. He says: "I am confident that the defence have done enough to substantially erode the credibility of the forensic evidence used against Barry George at his 2001 trial. The prosecution claimed the evidence was compelling but we now know that it's significance was entirely misrepresented, confusing the judge and the jury."

George who was seated in a cage wearing a blue open necked shirt and black suit, spoke only to confirm his name. His defence barrister, Mr William Clegg QC argued that key forensic evidence at trial was of no value and was "neutral." The single particle of Firearms Discharge Residue found in a jacket belonging to George, he contended, did not prove that the wearer of the jacket had been near the firing of any gun, let alone that he had fired the murder weapon.

If the judges overturn George's conviction it is expected there will be a retrial. A date for the handing down of the judgment has yet to be announced.

S C Lomax's book, Who Killed Jill Dando has now been published by John Blake Publishing under the title Justice for Jill: How the wrong man was jailed for the murder of Jill Dando
