On BBC FOUR in their ‘Women We Loved’ series, the November 16th episode featured the well known children’s author, Enid Blyton, portrayed by Helena Bonham-Carter. It tells the story of Enid’s relationships and how she became a writer. Enid’s first husband was Major Hugh Pollock, a publisher and former army officer from the First World War, played in the BBC drama by Matthew Macfadyen.
Enid and Hugh were later divorced after she had an adulterous affair. Hugh went on to remarry Ida Crowe, who also became a prolific author, publishing over 120 novels under nine different pen names, a large quantity for Mills and Boon.
To coincide with this BBC drama we have just published Ida Pollock’s own memories, Starlight. We have been negotiating to publish them with Ida for nearly a decade and now aged 101, she has finally agreed to release her own story . It is a fascinating insight into her life and the many characters who have also become household names. Actor Matthew Macfadyen was sent a version of Starlight, which he used to help him study the characterisation of Major Hugh Pollock.
